Papers Presented at EFORT Meeting | MatOrtho

The 19th EFORT Congress takes place this week in Barcelona 30 May to 01 June 2018 and is billed as the largest platform for European Orthopaedic professionals to exchange knowledge and experience within Europe and with overseas colleagues.

The main theme of the congress is ‘Innovation and New Technologies’, which will showcase, amongst others, advanced implant technologies.

We are delighted to share that two papers will be presented at the meeting; these describe work recently carried out by The Freeman Hospital in Newcastle that add to the excitement around the new ReCerf™ Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty. Both papers concern aspects of using ceramic monoblock components, femoral heads and acetabular cups, with no metal components and will be presented by Mr Adam Farrier. These studies have highlighted some highly appealing characteristics of the ReCerf™ device:

  • Distortion of a thin, monoblock acetabular cup when impacted press fit into the acetabulum may be a concern for the high tolerances required to deliver longevity of the articulation. However the work presented will show that the deformations for existing ADEPT® acetabular cups are extremely small and well within the performance allowances. Further, it has been found that ceramic monoblock thin cups that will be used for ReCerf™ are even less affected by the press-fit forces.
  • Distortion of spherical femoral resurfacing heads after implantation is also extremely small and within performance allowances. The work presented will show that any such deformation is even smaller with ceramic monoblock components: ceramic femoral heads are more dimensionally stable than metal counterparts.
  • Ceramic hip resurfacing heads allow higher heat dissipation during the cementing process, producing a smaller bone temperature rise than metal heads, which indicates a lower risk for thermal damage or thermal bone necrosis for ceramic resurfacing.

We look forward to hearing positive feedback from the MatOrtho® representatives in attendance and hope the event drives further excitement for our new hip resurfacing solution.
